St. Joseph’s Province, Tezpur

St. Joseph’s Province was canonically erected on 13 February 1988 with Sr. Mary Sebastian as its first Provincial Superior. Initially its administrative office was at St. Mary’s Convent, Barpeta Road, Assam. The province then had 114 sisters and 116 centres spread out to the state of Assam, West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The early years of the province were a period of intense crisis for finance, personnel and infrastructure. In 1994 the headquarters of the province was shifted to Jyoti Bhavan, Tezpur. Within a span of 9 years from its erection, the province has grown and expanded spreading out to 15 dioceses with 36 communities and 227 members. And there emerged a need for further branching out to a region comprising of the centres in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala which now has become two Provinces, namely Mary Immaculate Province, Kolkata and Little Flower Province, Bangalore.

Presently the province has over 200 members working in 32 centres under the diocese of Tezpur, Diphu, Itanagar, Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Bhopal and Tellicherry. The Sisters render their wholehearted service in different areas of its mission. Their contribution towards pastoral, educational, medical and social activities of the Church is much appreciated. It is through these they express their commitment to Christ and his mission.
